The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has warned the All Progressives Congress, APC, over what it described as its proclivity towards violence in the conduct of its Congresses in the State.
The APC had last Saturday, conducted its ward congresses across the federation. The congress in some states were marred by violence and ballot snatching.
PDP in a press statement issued by its State publicity secretary, Don Ubani and made available to DAILY POST on Tuesday, said that its concern was the peace and progress Governor Okezie Ikpeazu led-PDP government had been able to enthrone and sustain in the State.
The ruling party in the state warned that the peace currently being enjoyed by Abians should not be truncated by the inordinate ambition of members of APC.
Parts of the statement reads,”The Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, a Political Party known for its democratic credentials, wishes to warn one of the feeble Opposition Parties in the State; All Progressives Congress, over it’s proclivity towards violence in the conduct of it’s Congresses in the one hundred and eighty-four electoral Wards in the State that was scheduled to have taken place last Saturday, 5th May, 2018.
“Intelligence available to the PDP in the State points to the fact that deep irreconcilable factionalization in APC in Abia State sharply stood against the Congress in the State.
“As at last Saturday when the Congress was meant to take place, the tug of war between the faction led by Chief Ikechi Emenike, on one side and the other which is said to be led by Chief Orji Uzor Kalu seemed to have heightened.
“The commotion and confusion in APC was so much last Saturday that the officials that came from Abuja to conduct the Congress became, themselves, engulfed in the confusion. In most of the wards, it was reported that free for all was the order of the day.
“In their panic measure, the Congress was deferred to the following day, being Sunday, 6th May, 2018. Even when some members of the Party protested that Sunday is their holy day of worship, it was learnt that Kalu roared like a badly wounded lion, warning that Church worship was nothing compared with the very important business of power.
“Sunday has eventually come and gone yet APC leadership in the State could not put it’s house in order.
“Though what is happening in APC is internal to the Party, the concern of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State is that the peace and progress that the Party has been able to enthrone and sustain in the State should not be truncated by the inordinate ambition of members of APC.
“Meanwhile, reports trailing the APC Ward Congresses in Nigeria have shown that the Party thrives only in violence and destruction. How then would it be able to conduct a free, fair and credible general election in 2019?”
