Arsene Wenger was full of praise for goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after he made a string of saves in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Sunderland on Tuesday night.
The 23-year-old, who has come up through the ranks at Sunderland, put in a fine showing at the Emirates Stadium to deny Arsenal the opener until the 72nd minute when Alexis Sanchez tapped in from close range.
Standard Sport revealed in December that Arsenal made an enquiry about signing Pickford on a permanent deal in the January transfer window and were ready to loan him back to the Black Cats before the goalkeeper suffered an injury.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will make a move for Pickford when the transfer window re-opens this summer, but Wenger was left impressed with the shot-stopper’s performance against his side – labelling him as “exceptional”.
“The keeper saved 11 of them so he did extremely well.”
Despite the praise, Wenger insisted the Gunners do not require another goalkeeper in their ranks saying: “We have plenty of goalkeepers.
