The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested 20 suspected cultists including 7 minors.
Imohimi Edgal, the state Commissioner of Police, who disclosed this to newsmen in the state yesterday, said some of the suspects were arrested while on their way for a reprisal attack on rival cult members.
He said that most of those arrested were members of the Eiye secret cult.
According to him, several weapons such as locally and foreign made guns, cutlasses and axes were recovered from the suspects.
Edgal said the command got information from the people of Ejinirin-Iworo area of Ikorodu.
He said the police swung into action with his team and arrested four suspects belonging to Eiye confraternity and they all confessed to belonging to the cult group.
He said, “Similarly, the Igbogbo Divisional Police Officer, CSP Isa Lawan, received information that a cult group would be gathering at Bayeku area, Igbogbo in Ikorodu for the initiation ceremony of newly recruited members.
“The DPO was said to have mobilised his undercover team to the location and effected the arrests of the suspects during the initiation”.
Edgal said that the command arrested 35-year-old Lukman Olawale Agboola, aka Baggo, a suspected cultist and leader of the Eiye confraternity for threatening people with a gun at New Garage area, Bariga.
He said, “Preliminary investigation further revealed that the suspected cultists, who all reside in Lagos Island, had lured the newly recruited members with claims of a party”.
Edgal said one worrisome thing about the arrest was that seven of the suspects were minors.
The commissioner, however, said the minors would be transferred to the gender unit of the state command for diligent prosecution, while the rest would be charged to court.
