There is an anxiety within the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) in Osun State, following a meeting held in Lagos between members of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s political dynasty and leading aspirants contesting the September 22 gubernatorial election on the platform of the party.
DAILY POST exclusively gathered that the basic reason behind the meeting, which took place over the weekend was to set a mechanism in motion to create a soft landing for one of the leading contestants, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola.
Oyetola, who is the incumbent Chief of Staff to Governor Rauf Aregbesola was said to have profound affinity with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s political dynasty. It was confirmed that these forces have succeeded in whipping Governor Aregbesola to line in the choice of Oyetola as an “anointed candidate. ”
According to a credible source within the party, the rising agitation from the West senatorial district in the state, coupled with the daring stance of majority of the aspirants, especially those from the West zone compelled Governor Aregbesola to facilitate the Lagos meeting.
“The development in the party is practically unexpected, the Governor was not expecting those aspirants to be resolute to this level, hence, the need for him to reach out to superior political machinery in Lagos.
“It has not been possible for Aregbesola and the party machinery in the state to confuse aspirants in favour of Alhaji Oyetola, who is their choice, and it seems the people have become more conscious and irrevocably agitated.
“Many things are working against the candidacy of Oyetola in the party, first, he is a necessary factor in the policy formulation and implementation of the outgoing government, and secondly, he is from the central, the zone of the immediate past governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.
“Unlike before when little persuasion and appeal could dissuade people to change their position, there is an obvious change of political paradigm in the party and the state at large”, the source said.
DAILY POST, however, gathered through investigation that one of the resolutions of the Lagos meeting was to ‘settle ‘ strong aspirants with huge amount of money and alternative political opportunities.
It was gathered that some of those individuals considered as forces to reckon with amongst aspirants are the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Najeem Salam, and the Secretary to the Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti.
Credible information has it that while Salam might have agreed to the entreaties to step down at the meeting, and alleged “juicy” condition attached to it, the same could not be said about Adeoti, who many believe remains a political juggernaut in the party and great mobiliser of note.
“Do not be surprised to see many of the aspirants coming up with flimsy excuses to step down for Oyetola, including the speaker, Najeem Salam; he has tactically agreed.
“The only person that still remains a clog in the wheel of actualization of this plan is Alhaji Adeoti. He has not been amenable to their political chicanery. I think the man has a strong and independent mind”, the source added.
